Let Go, Hold Fast

Jamie Willis

Do not harden your heart

As you grow tall

As you grow old

And at the end shrink small

Do not harden your heart

As brokenness becomes apparent

In the world all around

And your own self deep down

You unbelieving heart

Do not become calloused

From the bitterness

That tries to leave a bad taste

Do not harden your heart

Oh child, in your fear

As you desire to enter His rest

At the end of this long, weary day

Do not harden your heart

Or let change clench your fist

As life flips and dips

And it feels as though something's amiss

Cause the wholeness we seek

Is not behind but before

So turn your face forward

And don't look back

Instead, look change in the eye and say,

"What a beautiful opportunity to surrender"

To let go, is to hold on

So hold fast to His freedom

Sit still, run fast

Throw back your head and laugh

Cry in front of anyone

Sigh deep when the day is done

Let your thoughts be carried by the wind

And know the peace it is to play

Relieved from the burden of perfection

The control you were never meant to bear

And when you come home

At the end of this long day

He'll be waiting up for you

The blood over the doorpost

The grace that lets you in

So do not harden your heart

But allow the hardship of life

To soften you sweet

And make you susceptible to bruising
